From a website visitor: Trumpeter Dose was detached to Custer's command on the day of the battle so was not with company G. He was with headquarters company. I have been reading a bunch of books on the LBH and I am a bit confused as to where Trumpeter Dose was killed. Some books have him killed near where Deep Coulee and Medicine Tail Coulee meet and others have him killed near the troops killed in the Deep Ravine area to the south of Custer's Last Stand position. Current books seem to lean towards the Deep Ravine location; however, I have not found out why they believe this. I read something about Walter Camp reversing himself and deciding with newer evidence that Henry Dose died where Camp originally had Corporal John Briody of Co. F dying. Nothing was mentioned about what this new evidence was for him to change his mind. Is there anyone who can shed light on any of this? He added in a follow-up message that "the Deep Ravine location is supposedly Marker 257 according to what I read in book The Custer Battlefield Casualties by Richard Hardoff on Pages 49 & 50. An additional question from the same visitor: "I was wondering if anyone knows if the different companies trumpeters were 'also' considered part of the regimental band or not?"

The wife of Henry Dose's great grandson has contacted me in hopes that someone can give her information regarding Henry's life before he joined the 3rd Infantry in 1870.
Does anyone know when he came to the US, who his parents were, etc.? Every morsel of information will be appreciated!
