Shepherd; there were no Ordnance Sgts. at LBH Hammer's book lists Saddler, Commissary, and Quartermaster Sgts assigned to the 7th. No Ordnance Sgt.
QM Sgt. Thomas Causby and Saddler Sgt. John Tritten were detached to the Yellowstone Depot. Commissary Sgt. Charles Brown was not present, on furlough, and later deserted in Nov. 1876.

Ord Sgts were a special kind of NCO. They belonged to the post to which they were assigned. They were not even part of the Ord Dept, although they wore the same uniforms as enlisted men of Ord. Through at least 1865 they were appointed through the AdJ Gen's Dept though much of their work involved the Ord Dept. While the HQ of the 7th Cav was at Ft. Lincoln the post Ord Sgt would have been considered part of the Regtimental Field and Staff but he would never have been formally attached to the regiment, and he would not have left the post. I am not a re-enactor but the reprints of August Kautz' books are gold mines of information re: the Civil War and the years following. See the reprint of Kautz' "The 1865 Customs of the Service for Non-commissioned Officers and Soldiers." Also Ord Sgts were among the highest paid enlisted men, and were not at all the same thing a an ordinary sergeant of the Ord Depts. Some enlisted men of the Ord Dept my have been in the field with Terry's ordinance officer.
