John A. Thompson was promoted to Major of the 7th Cavalry on August 25, 1867 while he was serving with, I believe, the 4th Cav. (I will verify that this weekend). He never joined the 7th being killed by desperadoes at Ft. Mason, TX on November 14, 1867. I had always wondered about what the devil happened but had not taken time to look it up. This morning (thank you insomnia!) I was watching History International and lo and behold, they mentioned Maj. Thompson. It seems he was slain by the Taylor boys in one of the opening incidents of what became known as the Taylor-Sutton feud of Texas. I went digging into my library and then reread the section on that feud from I'll Die Before I'll Run by C. L. Sonnichsen which corroborates that a Major (no first name given) Thompson was slain by the Taylor boys in November, 1867 at Ft. Mason. Since I am only willing to stretch coincidence so far, I am confident that the NFN Maj. Thompson and Maj. John A. Thompson of the 7th were one and the same.
Hopefully this weekend while I am temporarily a bachelor I can get over to Ft. Leavenworth and check out the Army-Navy Times and get more details. Hmmm, that may also be a good time to watch Son of the Morning Star in all its VHS splendor ;D
Best of wishes,
Billy
