From one of our website visitors:
I am researching the names of the wounded who were transported on the Far West. Two soldiers died on the way back to Bismarck. I would like the names of these individuals along with the names of the injured. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I know one was a Private William George of H Company, who died on board the Far West on July 3, 1876. He was involved in the Hilltop fight of the Reno-Benteen area. His grave is still being taken care of by locals on the Powder River Depot (Powder & Yellowstone Rivers). Diane, if you would like a picture of it, I'll be up there in a week and would be more than willing to snap you one.

Also Corporal George King, Co. A; died 2 July aboard Far West, of gunshot wound received in hilltop fight. Buried on north bank of Yellowstone river at mouth of Big Horn.
And Pvt. James C. Bennet, Co C; of spinal wound which resulted in complete paralysis below there; died 5 July aboard steamer as well. Was detailed to pack train, wounded on hilltop. No mention of burial site, most likely Ft. Lincoln.
Finally Pvt. David Cooney, Co. I, of gunshot wound to hip during hilltop fight. Assigned to pack train. Died at Ft. Lincoln hospital 20 July.

Jim,
I would really appreciate a photo of William George's grave. He was mentioned during one of the talks at our Louisville conference last year because he was from Lexington, Kentucky.
Thanks! Diane
