Hi Chuck, is this the invulnerable circular skirmish line that has unlimited supply of ammo, that it could last a siege by 1500 warriors for over 24 hours, if so I have also seen this scenario before with a guy in a Hussar uniform commanding it and a strange looking Adjutant urging him on.

Yes Ian, it is that invulnerable circular skirmish line. The great advantage of it is that if things go real bad, you call everyone to the position of attention, order about face, and it becomes a circular firing squad. This maneuver saves all that messy save the last round in your revolver business. Very efficient.

On the same principle as the hollow square that Reno apparently could have used to exit the timber, inching crab like to a safer position whilst volley firing at encroaching Indians. (Same impeccable source for cavalry tactics)

Hunk: And that hollow square would have worked to inching along all the way from the timber to Retreat Ford IF Reno had about 800 soldiers. Of course if he had 800 soldiers there would have been no need to retreat. Sort of a Catch 22 of Fort Knox logic.

Hunk: I think our good friend Clair lifted that particular tactic out of "Sharpe's Waterloo". I suppose he figured what would work for one of Wellington's unbroken battalions moving a short distance, would work equally as well for a hundred or so guys, trying to transit a mile or so of ground, while surrounded by a thousand or so screaming, bloodthirsty and very pissed off savages (who I am not so sure were savages after all - the pissed off stays though). Right up there with arrow dodging horses, and impregnible skirmish lines. Clair's motto is "Forty Miles a Day on Beans and Horse Crap"

I think Clair would have added La Haye Sainte if he could Chuck.

And the Second Battle of the Marne if he thought it would serve his purpose. Add to that the Alamo, Jena, Agincout (there's a good one for arrow dodging horses) and Little Orphan Annie taking on Daddy Warbucks.

Hunk: First of all understand that Clair and I are friends. We are friends that disagree on nearly everything from grand strategy to the proper tempature at which a hot dog is cooked.. As long as you consider my meaning that the crap is the proverbial type rather than the type the sticks to you shoes, you may indeed quote me until the bovines come back to the home pasture.

HunK: I am light enough. I just wanted it on the record that Clair and I disagree in substance, but that does not effect our personal relationship. He is a good guy who I really like. So I just wanted to make clear, not particularly to you, but to anybody that might read this that it was not a personal thing.

I very much admire loyalty which is a rare quality in our superficial world..
