Sorry - the 5.5 miles is actually the loop to the main trail and to the morass. His estimate of the distance covered on the scout is 5 miles. See Centennial Campaign, 1988 paper edn, pages 178 for the narrative portion, and page 303 for the timetable.

It's wrong to imply Gray is in conflict with himself.
In the fourteen years about between the books he revised his theory and negated CC where it was in conflict with his updated figures. Like Utley says in the prologue, CC had been supplanted as the best book on LBH.

Darkcloud: I did not implicate Edgerly in anything [one of your earlier posts], nor did I imply that Gray was in conflict with himself. You asked a question, and I answered it, your only reference being to "Gray" Your inferences are your own. As Jacob Greene once wrote: "If men choose to differ, then they will differ." As a matter of interest, I share Utley's characterization of Gray's later work; but that doen't mean I have to accept everything he concluded.
d o harris: I've mentioned in different posts "research papers" that I've written. These are all chapters in my unfinished book mss, which may or may not ever be completed, depending on how long I live. At my current rate of new output, I would estimate I'll have to last until I'm about 147. If you would like the chapter "Benteen's March" which is 12 single-spaced pages, let me know your mailing address, and I'll be happy to send you a copy.
Unfortunately, I have no conception of Emailing documents or how to scan to the internet. I only recently learned how to scan into MSWord - now I have to buy a scanner with auto document feeder to make it easier on myself. I ain't gonna sit and scan 1400 pages one at a time. You can also let me know if there are other specific facets of the fights you are interested in. The chapters are designed to stand alone, but just so you know, the chapter on Reno's valley fight is not finished and the one on Custer's fight has not been started, since I'm still forming theories in my mind about that fight.
I'll send you stuff within reason. You can Email your mailing address to me at
biggordie@hotmail.com
and let me know your areas of interest.

Harpskiddie,
Then why are you quoting Centennial Campaign?
Be advised, make sure your computer has the ability to do what you want. Just saying, I spent painfully long hours sorta learning how to do all that, although I realize it's all better these days. It's not just the auto feed scanner that's the issue, though. It's a computer, and they hate us.

DC: Because you said "Gray credits them....." and I asked which Gray you meant, and you then asked where he said 5.5 miles.
My computer says it will utilize auto dacument feed for scanning, but I know what you mean. I found out how to scan into MSWord by sheer accident. I had scanned a few pages of other stuff in, but found I could not edit them. And I did want to be able to edit things, otherwise I might just as well type everything all over again.
I need the ability to edit, because as I said somewhere on this site, maybe in the Introduce Yourself thread, that I am not locked into anything [which is at least partially true]. The big problem I've faced is the same as everyone else. Nowadays they don't deign to give you a user's manual in hard copy. You have to ask the computer to tell you how to use it; and I think mine lies to me all the time.
