I have no special defenses for Martini. I think he confused himself much times, but that happened to Benteen too or to Reno, that were witnessing things and the contrary of it some year later or even some times later. Much were POOR witnesses there. This doesn't help the truth.

However, with Martini he was the last soldier to see Custer and may have seen/heard things that could shed some light on Custer's last plans/movement.
And then his not knowing what Custer/Cooke discussed about sending a message to Benteen and what was written on the note, then not saying much to Benteen about what he witnessed, then telling everyone else that Custer was about to ride through the village and Reno was giving it to the Indians left and right.
Hard to figure out just what Martini saw/heard and whether he was reluctant to discuss anything because of his bad English. He even stated later that he was "misunderstood" at the COI.
