East of the LBH in the MT ford area there was an indian camp ,maybe small but i was there
Is it possible that the reason Custer sent the two companies to the MT ford was to destroy this camp and clear the way for the next attack across the river ?

I'm not sure I'm understanding where this small village is supposed to be. When you say east of MTC, I'm thinking east of the park road, like beyond Butler's marker? I'm not following where it would be. Sorry.

i think it was in the flat just across MT ford , Custer followed an indian trail east of the river toward Reno hill , maybe this camp was not so small , but even 10 teepees in front of the ford had to be cleared out if you want to charge across the ford

shatonska, this is most interesting. What's the source for this? Just the fact of the Indian trail, or are there Indian accounts or maps that state it was there? You're right, it would explain so much ...

I don't remember the source but i read it in some indian accounts , i have written hoping to learn more about it , here comes the usual problem of the missing of Santees and Sans Arcs accounts ,the two tribes right in the center of the ford , we know that Minneconjou had horses around weir point (Beard's account) other like Two Moon or White Bull had horses on battle ridge , nobody said flat at mt ford was a place for horses (it seems a good place), maybe because there was an indian camp there

We're definitely told that where Custer split from Reno's trail, there was an Indian trail to follow; and I seem to remember one account, at least, saying it was a lodge-pole trail (rather than just ponies). Wish I could remember the source. So -- it had to be going somewhere. (Unless it was coming, rather than going?) Seems an unnecessarily difficult route to choose with travois, when there's the valley floor ... but you're right, it does need looking into.
I've only seen a few Indian maps of the village, but of those I've seen, none of them indicate tepees on the east side of the river. Could it have been wickiups, perhaps?
