Despite all the Hollywood movies and all the paintings, I think the best depiction of the battle as far as accuracy goes is the warrior tentskin pictograms. These do not show Custer in a fancy Civil War cavalry uniform, but in buckskins as he appeared in photos on the plains. They also show that the standard cavalry trooper did not wear the white hat of the "good guys" as they did later in the 1880's and after but a dark one. They also did not necessarily wear boots, but "booties" or shoe-boots, as a photograph of the remains of the battlefield shows and as do numerous photographs of posing soldiers. Nor did they brandish sabers in the battle, but used carbines and rifles. This was no battle of Waterloo, and Custer was certainly no Napoleon! It's definitely time to end the hype!!
