Does anyone know if there has been similar study of the troopers and civvies who died with Fetterman to the ones done on Custer's Seventh i.e nationality, age, enlistment dates etc? I know that around 40% of Custer's regiment were foreign born...German, Irish, English etc. It would be interesting to know if the same data is out there regarding Fetterman's command.

I really doubt that, to be honest. No battle during the AIWs have been so heavily researched as the LBH. People will soon be writing bios on GACs dogs, since that must be just about the only thing left which is lacking some sort of in.-depth study. Noggy

Thanks Noggy. I thought it was a forlorn hope. It may prompt someone to do the research al la Custer's men. I have had some good news though. I have been commissioned to write 2 articles for the Manchester History Review magazine. 6.000 words max plus images. I have already outlined the articles to them, and the subject matter, so they know what they are about, and they are very keen. First is regarding young men from this part of the world enlisting in American wars during the 19th century with special reference to LBH and also the use of the Wild West Shows as a bolt hole for those warriors, and their families , who fought at the LBH. The second article is about the influences, literary and otherwise, on the first Western, shot near Blackburn. I want to develop that further into the reasons behind the popularity that Westerns had in this country, especially our region. Quite a package eh! Thanks for your comments and I look forward to hearing from you soon. I may need to tap your knowledge as the weeks go by.

I found what seems to be a list of the US casualties, but it is only names. wygenweb.com/sheridan/forts/fetterma.htm Maybe it is possible to get somewhere from there, like unit roosters or something. Who knows? Some names look to ble clearly German, while I would guess Shannon for instance could have been Irish...but maybe, if you really want to dig, a mail to these guys could be of hel? www.fortphilkearny.com/fetterman-battle-historyI think you have mentioned that western before, what was it called again? Congratulations with the bookings, always nice when someone wants to go ahead with your ideas (I do some writing myself in my spare time) All the best, Noggy

I threw some spare time at this, so: One obvious problem with anthropology is reburial of the remains, firstly to Last Stand Hill, and then the National Cemetery. There does not appear to be much archaeology other than interprets of participant accounts and various pro and anti Carrington stances, with a stubborn wife to the fore. Ding........ There is an article on the Billings Gazette website, as 'Archaeologist seeks better understanding of 1866 Fetterman battle. link and another BG article - link behind their paywall. Firearms Artifacts from the Fetterman Battlefield linkThis article link seems to utilise some work by CAG (USAG) at Levenworth, which is always worth a shufti. Abe book's inventory is worth a skim link where link - FORT FETTERMAN's CEMETERY - caught my eye. I know there is some stuff out there on the blame game bruha, where Carrington essentially kicked his dead Captain and colleague of the Civil War years but digging that stuff out is long haul and not mine. Fetterman was actually a capable, experienced, and ambitious type who earnt worthwhile merits and respect during ACW. Carrington, it seems, had prudent imagination Calamitous Pursuit by Marc C. Jeter, Liberty University. They who serve and die do not get further chance to try, whilst those who don't, do. There is some stuff on the Friends site, but finding it is a pain. Search the site with a search engine rather than in site.

This is to Noggy, my fellow countryman. Do you know anything about the supposed 'first Western' shot at Blackburn in 1899 called Kidnapped by Indians?
