Dear everyone:
I'm interested in Lincoln's proclamation (1865, ... any others?) pardoning deserters that returned to their units. I've searched the web for the exact proclamation and how it pertained to the 7th Cavalry, but I find nothing that satisfies. What was the Army General Order pertaining to this proclamation and where can I read it? Can some of you enlighten me and throw some good sources my way?
Thanks, Jenny

I am familiar with only a handful of ACW battles and the politics which brought them about, sufficient to avoid embarrassment during port and After Eights. However, a quick tinkle indicates the following. Recruits for a regiment of cavalry were concentrated at Fort Riley, Kansas, in August, 1866. The work of organization was inaugurated by Major John W. Davidson, 2d Cavalry, on the 10th September, and completed by Colonel Smith, on the 22d December.Lincoln entered the realm of the US's greatest President, on April 15, 1865. There was no hole in his bucket!.

There must also have been one initiated by Grant. I can't find out what/when/why, however.
