I think the stor is true, can't remember reading about it being a myth....can we also acknowledge this fantastic piece of writing towards the end?: "With the end of the war, John Willis Lea rejoined Margaret to begin their life together and eventually raise six children. He became an Episcopalian minister and moved his family to West Virginia. Custer, of course, remained with the U.S. Army and
eventually went on to bigger and better things at the Little Big Horn." Noggy

I'm never sure if writers who put things that way are serious or can't find a way to acknowledge reality. Funny guy, whether intentional or not!

Read "Custer's Trials" as it covers his life up to the point just before the Little Bighorn. It talks about his numerous AWOL situations and court-martials. You will probably find the answer there.
