I hope anyone can help me .... Maybe someone knows, what this Indian wears for a frock coat. Which uniform is that and which color did it have? It is the leader of the Arikara (Ree) scouts Bob-Tailed Bull He was involved in the battle at the Little Bighorn. Greetings Egbert

Looks somewhat like a circa 1850's -1860 blue uniform, doctored, but what do I know.
Regards, Tom

There is some background that may be of interest at this link. The Ree Narrative tells a little of Bobtail Bull's battle. I doubt that he died quickly or painlessly in being a noted enemy of the Sioux who had previously killed their women. He was not the senior Ree scout. That was Stab or Stabbed who carried a message to Custer in Medicine Tail Coulee before joining the pony stealing scouts on the bluffs east of Little Bighorn River. He may have met Pvt. Peter Thompson on the bluffs during his ride to and back from Custer. He also appears to holding a 'sword' of some description although it is difficult to discern its length. Welch papers Arikara, Mandan and Hidatsa warrior stuff. Welch Index.

Regards, Tom Tom; I`m no expert on US uniforms, but it looks kind of "flashy", like an officers uniform og parade uniform, does it not? The shoulder "pads" and decorative front certainly isn`t something a Private`s uniform would have. Or? By a quick look around the allmighty internet, the uniforms of the Dragoons mid-1850s look like a better match than those post-ACW. Maybe? And he`s actually got a saber! Imagine him running into Yellow Nose... a native fencing duel! That`s some hardcore pulp fiction stuff. All the best, Geir

I have edited this post about 8 times...!!!
It is a M1851 or 1858 U. S. issue frock coat in blue. As one friend of mine told me, it has been "tricked out" by the wearer, so obviously it has been modified greatly. Many more of the 1858s were issued than the earlier one, and the cuff detail makes it look like an 1858.
Also, it is an enlisted man's coat, but with officers' epaulettes.
Best wishes, Fred.
