I received the following from a website visitor:
My Great Grandfather was Levi M. Thornberry. He was in the valley fight and the hilltop fight with Company M. He and his partner Thomas Varner deserted and went mining for gold In June, 1878. I have read that they both were reduced to Private on 25 Feb 1878.
Do you have any info as to why they were busted? Do you know where I might find such information? The reduction in grade happened before they deserted. I have checked my usual references (Nichols, Wagner, Williams) and could not find an answer. Any ideas beyond referring him to the National Archives (www.archives.gov/research/military/genealogy.html)?
