From a website that I frequent, I notice that today is a prominent day in military history. For those interested in such things, among other things the following took place on September 15 of years gone by -
1776 British troops occupy New York City during Revolutionary War 1862 Antietam Campaign: 1) Stonewall Jackson captures Harpers Ferry, 2) U.S. troops find Lee's General Order No. 191, wrapped around some cigars 1914 U.S. Punitive Expedition, headed by General John Pershing, withdraws from Mexico after unsuccessfully attempting to find Pancho Villa. 1916 Battle of the Somme: British troops make first combat use of tanks 1926 Mussolini is wounded but survives an assassination attempt 1935 Nuremberg Laws deprive German Jews of citizenship 1938 Neville Chamberlain visits Hitler at Berchtesgarden 1940 Hitler cancels Operation Sea Lion, about a week before the expected D-Day 1942 Off Guadalcanal, carrier Wasp and a destroyer are sunk and battleship North Carolina damaged in torpedo attack by Japanese submarine I-19 1944 Marines land on Peleliu 1944 RAF Lancaster bombers carrying Tallboy bombs seriously damage the German battleship Tirpitz at anchor in a Norwegian fiord 1950 U.S. forces land at Inchon 1962 Soviet ship Poltava arrives in Cuba with a cargo of R-12 medium range ballistic missiles, one of the events that sets into motion the Cuban Missile Crisis. .

I meet 3 veterans of the USS Wasp CV 7 Friday night. The Wasp Association, CV7, CV 18 and LHD-1, held their reunion in Nashville and were recognized during the Grand Ole Opry show. The oldest veteran was 94 and 2 youngsters at 91. Great men. Regards Dave
