I suspect that is what I would conclude initially. Reno nor Benteen had no way of knowing that the Indians that faced Reno were not all that were present. Moving off as they did would send a message that the village was in deep trouble. Looking at this thing from that perspective changes a lot I think. QC,
Reno's defeated command is there for the taking, yet many of the hostiles are moving in a different and opposite direction.
Towards the main concentrated formation of the 7th cavalry.

And that main concentration would present more of a threat, at least a closer threat to the village.
There is no clear indication that Custer is any trouble from the Reno/Benteen perspective.
All Reno and Benteen knew of numbers is those numbers that had confronted them. They were not in a position on the bluffs at Reno Hill to view the true extent of the village as yet.

All that Reno knows is that:
(1) GAC has assured him that he will be in support; (2) His own battalion is defeated, and he will need support from Benteen; (3) Rather than closing for the kill, the hostiles are migrating northwards; (4) In the direction to where GAC has gone via the bluffs with the 2 battalion column.

WO:
1) By the time Reno gets away from the timber I think he is well aware that any promised support from that quarter has gone by the boards.
2) Granted.
3) Granted again.
4) Granted for the trifecta.
What Reno does not know:
1) That the Indians that confronted him were slightly less than half of the warriors available for battle.
2) The extent of the size of the village, from which Number 1 above could have been roughly determined.
3) That Custer would expose himself by dropping his undies at Ford B and say please kick me.
4) That Custer would divide again in the face of an imminent and growing threat.
5) That Custer once divided would place each of those two battalions beyond supporting distance of one another.
6) That Custer would attempt a positional disputing of terrain, rather than remaining mobile.
7) That Custer was a completely accomplished tactical moron on that particular afternoon, regardless of any past good, mediocre, or bad performance.
Knowing is one thing, but the things you do not know, and have no way of knowing are the things that get you or someone else killed. Now take the first six of the seven I listed, disregard number 7 as being my personal opinion and/or commentary, and tell me if you, or for that matter all, see any way of Reno knowing those six as he stood on Reno Hill immediately following Benteen's arrival. I cannot see how he could have.
