I am struck by the waste of all the time and lives lost it was for Custer to do what? Get a glimpse of a possible Ford across the river and then to turn around to face nothing but death and destruction.
Surely somewhere there was a Major Clipton type muttering "Madness! Madness!"

I was wondering if the channel of the river is where it was in 1876? When viewing from Google Earth it is easy to see the river has changed course numerous times. Re: river course.
See the discussion on 4/5 May 2014 in the thread "The Ford D Sector".

My First post (Hope it looks OK on the board!), I stopped at Carlow to visit Myles Keoghs house last week on the way back from West Cork, our annual family holiday. Mrs Myles Keogh kindly let me take pictures of the house and gardens, it then struck me whether it is possible to stand in the very spot where Myles Keogh stood at the battlesite. I am planning a once in a lifetime trip to the LBH park next year and a lot of the information and youtube videos show people viewing from the road, are the sites such as the Keogh sector restricted?. It's understandable if they are due to visitor volume but I thought I'd ask; to see the area knowing that it was effectively the last view of a particular combatant would be very poignant.

JoeG,
Easy answer, yes you can. You can even traverse the last 20 or so miles he traversed in his life, if you wish. You can see what he saw from the divide 6 or so hours before he died. There will be a number of members of this board at the battlefield next year. Also the LBHA, will also have its annual conference at Rapid City, SD next year starting in June, 16.
JoeG, welcome to the board.
Regards, Tom

Joe G.,
First of all, let me join the others in welcoming you here.
The simple answer to your question is, yes. There is a specific trail to Keogh's marker. At times, however, they close the trail. If that occurs, go into the visitors center and ask for the rangers, Mike Donohue or Steve Adelson. Tell them who you are and where you are from and they will give you a private tour of the area.
Also, you have two people there in the UK, who are acknowledged experts of Keogh, his life and times, and they too have been at the home many times: Elisabeth Kimber and Robbie Doyle. If you are interested you should be able to reach them through the CAGB.
Best wishes, Fred.

Thank you very much for the welcome and the advice. I will try and put a couple of pictures on the site. It has taken me a long time to get the nerve to join the messageboards, my interest has grown to near obsession in the last couple of years and am constantly amazed by the wealth of knowledge on the two main messageboards.
May I ask a question, are you 'fred' as in the author of Strategy of defeat at the little bighorn, all the messages seem to point to that but I didn't want to assume

Joe G,
Please do not be afraid to post here or ask questions. These boards have gone through something of a catharsis recently. Not only have we lost our resident bully, but we have lost a dear friend (though, unfortunately, not a "dear friend" to all) as well. The former to flights elsewhere; the latter to posterity and hopefully peace. The latter-- Dark Cloud-- was our resident genius, a difficult task master, but a fair one to those who exhibited the same trait and to those who spoke with the authority of knowledge and experience.
"Montrose" will have to assume Dark Cloud's mantle, for he is as close to an expert on this entire thing as you will ever be likely to find.
Also, I think the posters remaining here have no longer much of a stomach for bullies, trolls, and the low-life we so often find on the Internet. I would hope so, anyway.
If you wish to remain, to contribute, I think everyone here will have your back. We may know a good deal about the LBH, but we also know how to deal with the bullshit. I think a lot of us are tired of it.
Welcome, Joe. I look forward to your pictures and to getting to know you.
Very best wishes, Fred.

Joe, Fred, and everyone else who reads these boards,
The tactics of this fight are very simple to understand. I can explain the tactics both sides used to any high school graduate, in 30-45 minutes.
I want to avoid any belief or concept that you must have served in the military, or certain branches or grades to understand LBH. This was a single regiment fight with small arms. No air, arty, synch matrixes, nada.
Too many folks get intimidated by other folks resumes, who cares? Fred went to some washed up Catholic School, and I doubt he wore those plaid skirts that gave me issues when I was 13. There are several boards on this battle. Some of them get into your credentials, meaning whether your background qualifies you to have an opinion or not. That is not relevant here. All we ask is support your argument in a reasonable manner, following the Western philosophy of empiricism. This means the search for truth. Use logic, not emotion.
The facts, assumptions and constraints of this battle are pretty easy to understand.
Look at the battle. What do you think happened? What data was available to decision makers at a specific place, at a specific point in time? Would you do the same or different? Why?
If you need help with terminology or concepts, just ask. We are happy to help you make an argument. That doesn't mean we will not shred you afterwards. Samuel Clemens wrote that the reason old people can not sleep at night is because of all the vitriol and anger they have stored up over the years. This board provides a strong support to that hypothesis. You will get offended here, just part of participating in the internet.
Take a risk, offer a theory, see what happens.
This applies to all the lurkers on this board, who look but never post. Say something. Just once.
Respectfully,
Will
