My name is Jim and I live in northern Idaho, but I am a native of northern Michigan. I started this whole LBH/Custer thing just a few months ago... Was at the local library book sale when I decided to spend a $.50 on Custer' Luck. Holy cow, I couldn't believe how wrong all the stuff they taught me in school was on Custer/LBH. The addiction is now full-blown and I am steadily adding to my book collection.

Jim/Elkslayer,
Welcome to the "passion." My best friend, ever, moved from Washington, D. C., to Emmett several years, and my wife and I had the occasions to visit him a couple of times. Unfortunately, he died suddenly on June 8, 2008. You live in beautiful country.
I hope you enjoy your time here. Be forewarned, you will probably get raked over the coals a little, but that's the price of admission, the price of belonging, and the price of participating.
And please don't be afraid to ask and learn. All people here will ask of you is that you contribute intelligently, even if your contribution only asks questions. None of us have all the answers and for many of us, the pull is an unsolvable mystery those questions provide clues to. I am always adding, adjusting, changing, and restructuring my ideas, and don't let anyone tell you differently. And for your own good, don't get caught up in the acrimony involving sister-forums. There are a few rather mean-spirited and extremely jealous people involved in all this.... It is a shame, because even the most miserable have things to offer. Have you ever run into those who can never be wrong, can never admit to making mistakes, can never apologize...? This subject has plenty of them.
But welcome here. It is a pleasure to see your name.
Best wishes, Fred.

Jim: I too add my personal welcome. You mentioned Custer's Luck which gives me an opportunity to throw out a question to you and all the others. I wonder if anyone has ever done a serious study of the before Elizabeth's death accounts and those that followed after her passing. There was a similar work done on the Alamo about twenty years ago, showing the heroic, before the deaths of Driscoll and de Zavala (keepers of the flame), and the more pragmatic and I believe more accurate telling of the tale since their passing.

Hello Jim, Compared to some in the forum I'm pretty much a newbie myself. But I am very perceptive. I can see by the way you wrote your introduction that you are an intelligent and knowledgeable man. Which means you know that Custer was a self centered , egotistical, psychopath, that needlessly took 209 troopers to their death. I digress.
Just kidding Jim, welcome aboard. Look forward to exchanging ideas with you
Be Well Dan

Welcome to elkslayer and steve1956! I hope you enjoy your time here. If anyone gets to be too much of a curmudgeon, just shoot me a line at lbha@cox.net or a personal message (PM) through the top of the boards. I've been keeping these guys straight for eight years. I wonder if anyone has ever done a serious study of the before Elizabeth's death accounts and those that followed after her passing. I don't know that such a study has been published, but it certainly would be interesting because many speculate that a lot of the LBH story was suppressed in order not to offend Libbie. I'm not sure her death was the starting point of the slide in Custer's popularity, but it would be fun to explore the reason(s) for it. Diane
