Hi, this year in May and June I gonna visit LBH and many other places in Montana and South Dakota, most of my time I'll be staying close to Rapid City.
I'm very interested in wildlife and I really hope to be able to see some bison for instance. Are there enough opportunities for wildlife photographing? Is it worthwhile for me to take a 80 - 200 mm lens along or should I just take a 28 - 105 mm? Because I'm a visitor from South Africa, weight is an important factor.

Hello, my South African friend! I'm glad you are still planning your trip. Custer State Park is a relatively short drive down from Rapid City. You will see bison there, and there will probably be some close enough for the shorter lens. You can get a sense of the scenery by looking at allblackhills.com/parks/custer_state_park.php. The roadway is fenced off but otherwise the bison roam freely. I hope you have a wonderful trip! Diane

Hi Diane, thank you for the link, I'm really looking forward to the trip, leaving on June 11. I gonna stay at Billings, Hardin and most of the time at Rapid City. Herewith a link to an excellent South African webcam. Cape Town is one hour from where I'm living. www.capetown-webcam.com/Klaus

Hi Klaus. Looks like nice country at Capetown. Didn't realize it was so tropical there.
As far as lenses go, I used to haul around those big lenses but it quit being worth it because of all the hiking and extra weight of carrying them. It gets hot and muggy during the summer. A 200mm would be good for grizzly bears in Yellowstone Nat. Park but probably not necessary for the hills and valleys from Billings to Rapid City. I've driven that route before. Once you get close to the Black Hills, you will be in the forest and the 200mm won't help.
You won't see any wild buffalo/bison around unless you go to Yellowstone. Just the deer and so on. Any buffalo will be on a ranch or a preserve where you can get close. Google can probably find them.
My preference is a digital cam with a zoom and lots of storage so you can take thousands of pictures. One you can stick in your pocket as you go climbing around. Now that I have an EVo phone with 8mb cam that will take pics and an hour or two of video, I may quit using the camera. With it I can use another SD storage card or upload everthing to the internet. Most hotels have wireless internet if you bring your computer. I don't travel anymore without a loptop.
Have a good and safe trip.
