What is the best, most unbiased, biography of Reno? I’ve seen reference on these boards to “In Custer’s Shadow” and to “Apsalooka” (sp?). Does anyone have a recommendation between these two books, and are there other good books out there about Reno? I am making my Custer Christmas List and want to add a Reno book to the list.

jason:
You mihjt try Faint The Trumpet Sounds. although I believe it has a rep as being definitely pro-Reno. I have not read it myself. For years it was the standard bio of Reno.

Reno and Apsaalooka Survive Custer, by Ottie Reno, is a fictional work, based on facts and anecdotes favorable to the subject. It shouldn't be used as a strict source of evidence, but it is a good read to see new perspectives on this character.

In Custer's Shadow is definitely way more balanced than Faint the Trumpet Sounds, but you should probably read both if you are interested in Reno.
