Frankly, there's no point in banning alcohol sales on the Rez if it is too easily avaliable just outside its borders. I know the Navajo have made an attempt to regulate liquor sales outside the Nation's boundaries--trying to get Colt 45 and such out of such stores ... I'm guessing Means is making a similar statement or just garnering the attention he so needs to crave.
Of course, we could allow the Indians a modest semblence of maturity when it comes to these kind of adult choices. As I have noted before, my family runs 50-50 in the realm of alcoholism.

Have you read Russell Means' book, " Where white men fear to tread". It totally changed my opinion of the man. I mean I wanted him to be some sort of hero or something but after I read his book I came to see him him in a different way that was not so appealing. I've always cosidered myself a bit of a rebel and I guess that is what interested me in this man but I have concluded that he is an egomaniac who quite possibly has done more harm than good. And speaking of the alcohol sales ,I live in Nebraska the home of Whiteclay , the community that is just across the border from Pine Ridge. This community has a population of 14 and sells something like 4 million cans of beer a year! There is obviously a problem here but it seems that nobody cares what happens in some dusty little Nebraska town next to a Rez. And speaking of the Rez, I have an 85 year old Lakota friend who was born on the Cheyenne River Reservation. He is a decorated world war 2 vet. One day I asked him If he was ever a prisoner of war, his reply was " I was born a prisoner of war " ....Powerful statement!

Russell Means's main purpose in life is to promote and benefit Russell Means. That he is part Indian suits his purpose because it allows him to seem to advocate their interests and therefore become a big fish in a size of pond that he can manage. This man promotes himself as an arbiter of what is or isn't acceptable to 'his people.' On that basis, he condemned 'Dances With Wolves' and praised the remake of 'The Last of the Mohicans.' The fact that acted in the latter movie did not influence him of course.

I've watched him through the years and at first thought he was valid but have since realized he's like Al Sharpton, nothing more than a flim flam man. And like Sharpton he gets his power from the press not his people.

Made the same conclusions from the book. I've heard it said he spent much of the Wounded Knee occupation comfortably ensconced in a Rapid City hotel. Whether true or not, it pretty much sums up his 'career'. He probably did some good along the way, but it's always been more about Russell than the cause.
