•SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks holds a public meeting to discuss a new management plan for Rosebud Battlefield State Park in Big Horn County. The meeting is the first of several aimed at guiding park management over the next 10 to 15 years for the 3,000-acre site, where an 1876 battle was fought just eight days before the Battle of the Little Bighorn. On-site orientation, 1-3 p.m., 33 miles north of Decker; public meeting, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Sheridan Holiday Inn, 1809 Sugarland Drive. For information, contact Sue Dalbey at (406) 444-3764 or at suedalbey@mt.gov. It appears from the article that the orientation and meeting are on Thursday, December 7. Diane, I've had the good fortune to visit the Rosebud three or four times and love how it is still in its 1876 pristine state. But, frankly, I wish there was more signage or something more than the simple sign as you get to the field. Nothing that would ruin the atmosphere of the battlefield, but something to help orient a visitor to what happened there. It's such a massive battlefield with no markers at all. Or if not markers, maybe something like they have at the Washita with a self-guided walking tour pamphlet with small numbered wooden posts conforming to the pamphlets. Let's hope they do something that will save the battlefield but help the visitors. I think most visitors would be more students of the battle than the typical tourist you get at the LBH. Let's face it: to get to the Rosebud, you've really got to want to be there, withit being so remote.

I agree with you, Bubba. It is one of the few pristine battlefields, but visitors could use some help. I hope the meeting results in a non-intrusive way (one of those you've suggested) to keep it as natural as possible.
I really hope the "New Management Plan" doesn't include commercialization in any way!

The non-intrusive markers and a nice detailed brochure is a great way to go. It really helps to the touring of a historic site if you have some type of marker to aid in orientation and information.

Nice articles, Diane. I especially like the quote that Chief Plenty Coups and Crazy Horse would have no problem recognizing the area. It is a beautiful site, and I hope the citizens and organizations and government of Montana can pull together and save this place.
