TopKick, I drove through Sunday afternoon and didn't see the sign either. I hope it was just moved, and not stolen or gone permanently. southfork

My wife and I went by the area again today and did a little more detailed look. The post is still in place but not the sign. I plan on contacting the city to get clarification on this issue.

I have determined the fate of the old Mosby hanging sign. Apparantly the sign was recently knocked down (for the ?th time). The VDOT and the state historical people determined to change the wording and location since it was getting hit alot where it was. The newly made sign is now next to the Guard Hill sign north of Front Royal. I don't know the words, but I will photograph it next time I'm by. Apparantly the old (1927) sign sat in a VDOT depot for a while and was headed for the foundry to be melted down, but the Warren Heritage Society requested it. After some red tape, the society is now in possession of it (I saw it today). They plan to include it in an exhibit one day. The sign has some interesting repairs made to it. When it was first put where it was, on 14th street, the road was not paved. Later, road changes made it the main drag. Over time it was cracked and broken more than once.

I photographed this image yesterday. It is apparantly the Virginia Deparment of Historic Resources policy to enhance the wording of replaced signs because the old practice was to be minimal so people could read them as they passed without stopping. Now, the emphasis is more on telling the story, and people just have to pull over if they want to learn. In the new sign's case, one can see that Custer no longer takes blame. I just wish the new sign was closer to where the incidents actually happened.

South Fork,
Thanks for the post. I thought that was a new sign there next to Guard Hill. I have not been on the forum for over a month and kinda lost track of this post.
Nice to finally have an answer on the sign mystery.
