I recently read in a book titled "Before the Dawn" that American Indians preferred dogs brought from Europe. These European dogs are, of course, derived from the European Wolf. The adoption of the, if you will, "Whiteman's dog" doomed the Indian dogs derived from the North American Wolf. Their DNA lineages are all now extinct.
The book does not offer a reason for this. I speculate the European dogs were more domesticated than their American cousins and this made them more desireable to the indians.
Just an interesting tidbit.

Good one! Seriously, I read somewhere that the word Cheyenne was a derivative of a French word "chihyenne" or something to that effect which translated meant dog-eaters. I could be wrong.

hostler:
The French for dog is "chien" which may lend some credence to your remembrance of having read something along those lines.
My understanding, and don't ask me to say where it comes from, because I can't remember [old, don't you know] is that it is a bastardization of Shi-ya-ella [phonetic], which is some other Indian term meaning "Cut Finger People." It might be Shoshone or Blackfoot, or even Lakota for all I know, assuming that I have the word right

Very interesting indeed. I seem to recall the Cut Finger People phrase. Yes, pass the mustard and onions and chili and relish...
