A new thread! How many of the LBH Medals of Honor would be awarded under today's criteria? They were awarded quite easily in some cases prior to 1916 - in one case to an entire regiment (27 Maine?), just for re-enlisting. I believe that today, most are awarded posthumously

You're right that some medals were given for dubious reasons--i.e. political, family ties, who knows why. But others were given for going "above & beyond". This happens in most wars, but the common thread of giving a medal for heroism under fire is still there. Who knows, maybe more should have be given out on 6/25-26/1876--they're all heroes in my eyes.
