Kill Eagle's story is more easily obtained from a report of Captain J.S. Poland, 6th Infantry, 24 July 1876 at Standing Rock Agency, which is, I believe, reproduced in Graham's Myth. Kill Eagle denied taking part in the fighting [naturally - what is he gonna do, tell the Army he helped kill a bunch of soldiers?]; but there is little, if any, doubt that he was a participant.
Kill Eagle was head of a band of about 20 lodges, which would have represented 35 or 40 warriors.

I just read the whole narrative in The Custer Myth last night. I was grinning all the way through it at wily old Kill Eagle. The preface by the Standing Rock agent (is that Poland? Graham doesn't say) is the best part "I.....am satisfied from his manner and bearing that he has endeavored to tell the truth........ and is one of the most intellectual Indians I have met in Dakota." ....... intellectual enough to have fooled Poland!
