According to Hofling Custer’s principal weakness was the regulation of his self esteem. He goes on to say that Custer seems to have depended to an unusual degree upon a flow of recognition, admiration, and praise from others. Something he gained greatly upon his death.

Walt, you've presented not an entirely unfamiliar concept--but the ironies abound. Not only did GAC become forever famous, or infamous as the case might be, at death, but in life, knowing this penchant/need for public praise, herodom, etc., he seemed to do so many things to submarine the positive image he so desired.
It does seem that it was only Terry left in his camp after the Belknap hearings--and even then, only through tears.
Regards, Leyton McLean
