From Society Balls to Buffalo Tails, Ephemera Society of America Traces Grand Duke's Tour By Jim Crain "The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming!" could well have been the chant in 1871 as excited Americans prepared for the arrival of the Grand Duke Alexis and his entourage of Russian dignitaries. For the United States, entertaining royalty from abroad was a rare event, but the Duke was on a mission, and citizens would see to it that his tour was the tour of all tours. www.ephemerasociety.org/articles/grandduke.html

Interesting article that did cause me to wonder: I had always thought that after the hunt, Libbie met up with GAC and the Grand Duke in either St. Louis or Memphis, Nina Sturgis in tow, riverboating to New Orleans. The article says Alexis came to Louisville. I also wonder if the "batchelor" Grand Duke had already secretly married by then ...
I believe Libbie wrote about the leisurely pace of the party--how the Russian breakfasts took three hours and began at noon. She also commented that no young woman was safe from the Grand Duke's flirtatious ways ...
Looking forward to the LBHA conference next year!
