All--
As I have mentioned in another thread, it's time to call for entries to the 63rd Annual Arkansas' Writers' Conference, to be held in Little Rock at the Holiday Inn-Presidential, right near the William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Library (well worth a trip here on its own, like him or hate him). Dates are June 1-2. As it is an open conference, some of the subject matter covered by the various participants might be a tad on the beginner side, but the contests are open to any and all for a $10.00 (USD) fee. In many years we have received entries from every state as well as from Europe.
What may be of interest to LBHA fiction writers are a few of the following categories:
Grand Conference Award, fiction. Winner gets $100.00 and something to add to their resume. Winning is always an excellent notation, especially a nationally regarded conference. First chapter of novel, any genre, with synopsis, 25 page limit. More specific parameters can be found at http://www.fwca.org; look under "Contest Style" on the main page; it's toward the middle of the welcome banner.
Westward Ho Award: Sponsored by Spur Award winner, Dusty Richards (who is my mentor), winner gets $50.00. And if he's impressed with your work, he'll do his darnedest to help you sell it.
Either a short story or first three chapters of a Western novel.
Let's Hear it For History Award: only $25.00 to the winner, but I'm looking for historical fiction, something outrageously new about a character in any time before 1918. Yes, GAC fits in that category ... well, I think. I will have more information about this contest at www.fwca.org in the next few days. 25 page limit, must include synopsis.
White County Creative Writers' Award: Speculative fiction story (sci-fi, fantasy), alternative fiction. Nothing R-rated. Winner gets $25.00.
As with most writing competitions, you enter for the notoriety over financial reward. But a win is a win is a win, another notch on the writing bedpost, so to speak. Agents and editors automatically give a victorious manuscript a leg up on others in the slush pile or the pitch room.
Entries must be postmarked by April 30. All other information can be found at:

Scroll to lower part of page and you can click on all the pertinent stuff: rules, registration, contest details.
Regards and Good Luck! I wanna see some of your stuff win!
