Has anyone been published in Wild West? Is its staff receptive to submissions from new writers? Any details, such as how to submit, payment, etc., will be appreciated.

Diane, This is very out-of-date -- from a website last updated in 1998(!) and reflecting the previous ownership of the magazine -- but it may offer a clue: www.writingfordollars.com/Guidelines_display.cfm?Market=Wild%20WestThe current owners are Primedia History Group. Here's some info on True West magazine: True West True West publishes articles on figures (Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Jesse James, etc), clothing, trends, guns, etc. during the Old West. Buys One Time North American Rights. Payment is made upon publication, between $150-$800 for features. For more information visit: www.truewestmagazine.com/guidelines.html Is there an equivalent in the US for the two annual publications we have here in the UK -- 'The Writer's Handbook' and 'The Writer's and Artist's Yearbook'? If there is, that might be a handy source for information ...

Good detective work as usual, Elisabeth!
We do have similar publisher books in the US. I'm trying to get some behind the scenes info for a friend. It seems that this particular magazine uses certain writers quite a lot, so he is wondering if those writers have a lock on certain topics or if the magazine is "newbie" friendly. I guess I could just write to Greg Michno (one of the regular writers) and ask him.
Thanks! Diane

'Wild West' is owned by a corporation that owns a number of magazines. I get the impression, and that's all it is, that people that put it together do so because it's a job. Unlike 'True West' where Bob Bell are truly obsessed with their subject matter. I've never had any sucess with WW in regard to submissions, as a matter of fact I've could never even get a response from them after mailing in some submissions. A courteous 'drop dead' would have at least been appreciated. 'True West' owner and editor Bob Bell answers his own email. Big difference. Wild West uses slick art, there are generally numerous mistakes in the art work, wrong pistols, wrong clothes, etc. Great artists but they don't know the subject matter too well in my opinion. The articles are well written though.

Thanks to Perry Baker for this one: Bob Boze Bell has a new book on the Old West, the second in a planned series of five books chronicling what once was the incidental, if not the preferred, method of justice.
Bell, executive editor of True West magazine, is expanding some of his previously published stories in Classic Gunfights: Vol. II - Blaze Away!
The book provides in-depth looks at 25 gunfights leading up to the historic shootout at the O.K. Corral. Blaze Away! chronicles the violence that centered in Tombstone over a narrow window of time, 1880-82. For the full article: www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/local/articles/1204b2cowboy04.html
