A very nice online resource: Sheridan's memoirs, in full. www.pattonhq.com/militaryworks/sheridan.htmlHe writes beautifully -- very direct, very lively, often funny. And he doesn't mind admitting when he's scared, or doesn't know what to do, or whatever; most refreshing. Covers his pre-war life and service, the Civil War in great detail, the Plains (of course), and also his trip to observe the Franco-Prussian War. Fascinating reading.

Elisabeth,
Please be extremely careful with Sheridan's memoirs. They're one of the great pieces of fiction ever written. The lying starts on the very first page, when he claimed to have been born in Albany, New York.
What would you say if I told you I could prove to you that he was born in Killinkere, County Cavan, Ireland?
Hmmmm....now why do you suppose the great man would lie about something like that?
Eric

Oh, I agree; he's a shameless little so-and-so. But don't you find the lies people choose to tell just as revealing as the truths? It's a very entertaining read ...
