Here's another disturbing chapter of the civil war. The murdering of pro-union men in east Texas during the civil war. 'Brush Men & Vigilantes' is a not so pleasant read but it shows a side of the 'loss cause' that is better hidden, and it was hidden for years by locals until author David Pickering researched the events and came up with some horrific details about lynchings & executions of innocent people whose only crime was they refused to fight for the south, and were killed by local 'patriots'. Generally these 'patriots' were on the lower level of the social ladder and never enlisted in the confederate army. Most showed their patriotism by killing innocent people. Author Pickering died before his book was published, but he & co-author Judy Falls have written an excellent account of what really happened in a dark chapter of East Texas.
