Somehow it's taken dumb me until now to read this John Gray classic. Since I started it on Friday, little has gotten done around here as I can't put it down. So I thought I'd drop a note here to say if you haven't read it, make very sure you do. Gotta go! In the middle of the chapter, "Checkmate on the Little Bighorn".

I agree, CLW. Although Gray has come in for a bit of criticism, I think that it's one of the best LBH books. His "Custer's Last Campaign" is also a good read.

Whether or not one agrees with Gray's theories and conclusions, his 'Centennial Campaign' is a mine of detail that is of considerable help when researching any aspect of the 1876 Sioux Campaign. He is a writer who articulates in a clear and lucid way, who should be respected for the enormous amount of research he undertook and then shared with us.

Gray's CENTENNIAL CAMPAIGN is excellent. I think better and more reader-friendly than Custer's Last Campaign (which is also good)
The first part of CC is an excellent overview of the events leading to the government's conspiracy to start a war and the differences between the two cultures.
Gray does not divert to much into what happened to Custer and does not rely so much on time-lines as he does with CLC.
Highly recommended!

And the maps! Goodness I wish I'd had access to them earlier on. They are by far the best I've seen.

He clearly has more supporters than I thought!
