Okay, A lot of guys on this board visibly have no idea about Benteen's behavior after LBH. A little summarize for refreshing the memory. The truth from Saint Benteen :
1.Benteen said Martini told him the Indians were skedaddling. Maritini denied, and said he didn't know what this word means.
2. Benteen said he was 22 kilometers from Reno. In fact he was 3 according to Godfrey and Edgerly.
3. Benteen told Terry that the 7th made a forced march of 107 kilometers. In fact, according to Wallace, it was 55.
4. Benteen said he sent Weir to Weir Point. According to many including Edgerly and private Goldin, and even Benteen himself in a personnal letter to his wife, Weir disobeyed after saying "someone shall know of this ยจ[Benteen and Reno's behavior].
5. Benteen testified he couldn't hear the volleys of Custer's left wing at the river at MTC. Moylan, Varnum, Hare, Davern, Churchill, Godfrey, and all the witnesses denied this statement. A study of physician Flowers proves it is scientifically impossible Benteen didn't hear anything.
6. Benteen said he had no ammo, and had to wait for the pack train. Godfrey denied. Scout of the pack train Churchill and officer in charge of the pack train Lt Mathey denied.
7. Benteen and Reno said they were surrounded by warriors on Reno Hill. Sgt Daver, Lt Hare, Lt Mathey, Scout Churchill, Lt Godfrey... said the contrary.
8. Benteen said it was impossible to see Custer Hill from Weir Point. Of course that's ridiculous.
9. Benteen said the pack train arrived 1h30 later. report denied by Reno (1876 report), churchill, davern, mathey, martini, warriors red Feather, Fears Nothing, American Horse, One Bull, Flying Hawk.
10. Benteen and Reno's advocate presented 236 supporting signatures from men of the 7th during Reno's Court of Inquiry. 102 were demonstrated false by the FBI (and LBh chief historian Luce) and and lot of others are suspect but impossible to analyse without primary sources.
11. Benteen testified he didn't know why he had been sent by Custer on the left with his battalion...
12. Benteen and Reno's advocate presented a map at the Court of Inquiry which was presented as "Mac Guire's work copy". Cartographers demonstrated that the "copy" was changed volunterily. 7th members (DeRudio, Gerard, Herendeen, Martini...) testified they didn't even recognize the LBH battleground on the map !
13. Benteen said it was no organization on Custer Hill. Moylan, lt Mac Clernand, Gerard, Godfrey, testified the contrary. Indians too.
14. Benteen said the 7th was repulsed from Weir Point. Actually, according to Edgerly and Godfrey, it was not the case at all.
15. Benteen said it was 1'500 warriors in 1876. In 1879, he said 9'000.
And you have many more, if you like it. Benteen said Weir had an affair with Libbie Custer, that Weir was a drug addict, that Custer abandonned Elliott at the Washita, that Capt French was crying on Reno Hill, that Custer shot deserters without trial, that he, Benteen, said to Custer "shouldn't we not separate the outfit ?", that Reno wanted to abandon the wounded on Reno Hill on June 27th and march in the ennemy territory but him, Benteen, refused...
A great summarize of an honest and truly soldier.
