I found this while searching out some information about Gilbert Gaul this morning and recollected someone other than I had been interested in the sea/land route troops took to California prior to the trans-continental railroad's completion. It is an article by Gilbert Gaul entitled "Personal Impressions of Nicaragua" from the May, 1893 Century magazine. Here is the new URL: tinyurl.com/ks8blJust skimming the article, the locations it mentions correlate closely with the death locations found in the enlistment register of recruits and troops (as well as the regimental returns of the 8th Cavalry) who died during the 1866 Cholera epidemic while in transit between New York City and California. Not Custer but.... , Best of wishes, Billy
