Not sure if still in print or not, my copy is about five years old but perfect for this time of year with its abundant photographs and illustrations, excerpts from diaries, etc. all about Christmas in the frontier army. Published by the Nebraska State Historical Society, authored by Lori Cox-Paul and Dr. James Wengert. Chapters cover Christmas in Garrison, Christmas in the Field, Christmas Perils (about battles, Food, Drink (includes recipe for Artillery Punch), Santa Claus is Coming to the Fort, others. As you might expect, quotes from Libbie Custer's writings. Nice reading.

The next time I go over to the archives I will see if Lori has any copies lying around she wishes to get rid of! And by the way, if you want it autographed, feel free to send it to me and I will hand deliver it to herl Best of wishes to all, and a joyous New Year (am I too early?). Billy

Small world, have never met her but tell her that's a nice book she did. I checked on Amazon and there is one used copy for sale on there, if anyone wants to chase it. Purchased mine at the Fort Riley giftshop in 2000, back in the pre-9/11 days when you could simply drive on to a military post.

John, it sounds delightful.
In a similar vein, people might enjoy 'An Army Wife's Cookbook' by Alice Kirk Grierson, wife of Col. Grierson of the 10th Cavalry. It's only a slim volume, illustrated with occasional sketches, but it's very interesting. Many of the recipes are pretty luxurious by 7th Cavalry standards (they have eggs! and vegetables!); even so, it does help to flesh out the picture of what ordinary daily life was like. Lots of household hints and home remedies too. Published by Fort Davis National Historical Site, but also available elsewhere -- I think I got mine from the Kansas State Historical Society website.

Elisabeth,
Haven't heard of the book you mention but that sounds like a good one. Those foods sound like they would go well with "Artillery Punch."
