I managed to get a first edition of this book a few years back. It's a dreadful read, so Victorian purple prose. But it's the source for a ot of the myths.

Exactly. It's dire, but it's fascinating -- not least in its impassioned denunciation of Reno. (Libbie's opening salvo in her war against Custer's detractors.)
He's an awful hack, and his style is cringe-making. But as you say, it's the starting-point for many myths; useful to have, I think.
