Well, it turns out Custer was quite a writer. Or was he? Was Benteen correct in calling it "My Lie On The Plains?"

I'm voting "other, please specify". It's too dull and pompous to be Libbie's work -- but I bet she helped him with it.
And yes, Benteen was right! (You've got to forgive him almost anything for coming up with that one. Funny guy.)

Leyton, it sounds as if you think Benteen's reference was to the book's authorship. As Elisabeth suggests, I think it was Benteen's acerbic way of slamming the contents.

Ditto with Benteen's meaning of Custer not being accurate, truthful, or just bragging about his "life" on the Plains.
Whatever one says about Benteen, he does have a way with words.

Diane-- You're correct as to Benteen's motive behind his sarcasm--he was literally referring to the book's content, rather than its author. Amazing ... Fred could show signs of humour.
