Markland,
Thanks so much for the Becker/Adams web info. The Becker painting just might be the most viewed piece of art besides 'The Last Supper'. It has a lot of interesting things about it. The original painting shows the village on the east side of the LBH river...look closely. But at some point exact copies were made and the village began appearing on the west side...the correct side, but then other versions show the village on both sides of the river.
The original has other changes as well... the Indian shields were oval shaped in the original and later changed to the more correct round shape. The scalpings were much more graphic in the original but were toned down some in later versions.
I found out several years ago the John Mulvaney painting was right here in the Memphis Museum at one point. A good friend of my works there so I called him to see if I could see it. He told me it had disappeared at some point, probably in a trade with another museum, but no records were available on where it went. He didn't know though if it was a copy or the original but did say it was an enormous painting.
Years ago while driving through the beautiful state of Kentucky on business I stopped at an antiques store. On the wall was an illuminated version of Becker's painting. It was produced by the Anheuser-Busch company. I had never see one that lit-up before and tried to buy but was told it was not for sale. The man said it was the only thing in the store not for sale. He turned down my $100 offer so I left the store.
The original resides at the Anheuser-Busch company and is available for viewing on requests I hear.
