Leyton,
I think you've struck on the obvious parallel -- Rex and Custer! Both given the keys to a powerhouse and both threatening to blow the whole plan up with erratic decision making and turnovers (if throwing 200 + men into that onslaught isn't a "turnover" I don't know what is!).
Guess De Rosa would be a bit obscure for most. I'll have to update mine to a Ryan Howard or Chase Utley logo soon.

I remember De Rosa. He used to sing on The Arthur Godfrey [any relation?] Show, and had a big hit back in the 50s. His first name was Julius - Julius De Rosa.
Not much of a hitter, but had no speed and couldn't catch the ball.

I believe it was Julius LA Rosa and Godfrey fired him on air and La Rosa's career was never the same!
