Hello all. I'm new to this board and fairly new to the subject. I began corresponding with Fred Wagner in early September 2022 regarding a painted portrait series I'm creating of all LB battle participants KIA or DOW. I rely heavily on Fred's "Participants" book, as well as other tried and true sources such as Camp, Brininstool, Rickey, etc. I sent Fred files of each completed company for review and comment, although I'd only completed two as of November. He was excited at a fresh approach to the idea of having portraits of all the officers, soldiers, Indians, scouts and civilians, even though a good part of it is simply artist's rendering. That he was ok with my version of things was a relief. I never met him but he seemed like such a great person. I hope this group will find this project as interesting as Fred did. I was heartbroken to hear of his passing on 11/27/22. Tremendous thanks to Diane Merkel for putting me in touch with with Fred to begin with. Rest in peace, friend.

FWIW,there are NO verified photos of the scout Mitch Bouyer. It has very recently been established, without doubt, the supposed photo of him(with double woodpecker(actually Stellar`s Jays)headgear is actually that of a Ute tribe flutist.Even Wiki has picked up on this fact.

Thanks, Noggy! I'm pretty excited about it and its caused me to do a hell of a lot of reading and study about the battle. Fred W. was collecting them as I finished them and viewed the project as totally unique. I think I will dedicate it to his memory. I'm so sad I never got to meet him in person. I may publish it (I own a small publishing company so I'll just do it myself) but I'd really like to show them all together somewhere. I may have to buy a wall tent and create a roadside attraction if no one will give me temporary gallery space. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for your support!

I'd like to share my progress with this group, and notify all of you of the upcoming show. Best place to announce it? Here is my blog in case you'd like to follow it. I think I'll just post my updates to the project there instead of creating a separate website. Jenny Niemeyer Original Paintings
Thanks, J

You put it on here, I'll see the notification. I hope Diane reads this and comments on this thought. Would the LBHA book room be a good location to show Jenny's finished product, next June, in Billings? I know Diane will give us an unbiased opinion.
Good luck with your project. Fred and I spent a number of great times together and I am sure he would have been thrilled to see this project brought to fruition. I would love to see some of what you have completed.
Regards, Tom

What did Fred W. think of this? I'm going with his knowledge, and barring that I'll go with the NPS known facts about Bouyer. Archaeological research shows that photo is Bouyer. Thx, Jenny

Thx, Jenny Hi Jenny Actually, there is debate about this. I have not dug myself too deep into it, but in short, the claim is that the picture is of a Ute Indian named Acapore, who I believe was a musician or something cool. This board has a sister board, amertribes.proboards.com/, and they have a thread about this: amertribes.proboards.com/thread/753/mitch-bouyer-acapore-ute-indian There is a lot of very interesting facts here, so if you want to go deeper into one of 500 rabbit holes connected to thisbattle, I recommend it (I have now myself had to start reading up on this due to this thread...here I go again ) All the best, Noggy

It looks like that Noggy gave you the American Tribes source, good. This is a reach, there are still members of the LaForge family enrolled in the Crow Tribe in MT.Steve Andrews (Arizona Ranger on this board) has met one of them, if there was a pix of Bouyer, we probably would have seen it. But there may be a pix of his son or daughter as adults. You know that LaForge adopted them. Composite? It is a shot.
Anyway, good luck
Regards, Tom
