I received a request for additional information about Hobert Ryder. The email included the information from my website: littlebighorn.info/Cavalry/NameR.htm#HobertRyder. It also included a photo of a man I believe was Isaac Fowler:
On these boards, I found two posts that referenced Ryder. One was by Fred Wagner:

He [Vern Smalley in Little Bighorn Mysteries] talks about Private Henry Ryder PROBABLY being in the valley and hilltop fights, as reflected in both MEN WITH CUSTER and THEY RODE WITH CUSTER. Both Hammer and Carroll based their conclusion in their respective works on Pvt. Daniel Newell's story published 54 years after the battle in which he mentions a Corporal named St. Rider who helped him after he was wounded in the valley fight. Since no one named St. Rider shows up in Newell's company (M), the authors assume he has forgotten Ryder's actual name.
Smalley then goes on to say that Hardorff has concluded differently about Ryder, placing him on board the FAR WEST at the time of the battle, basing this on a copy of written hosptial orders. Smalley points out that these orders are July 1 but Hardorff apparently concluded these orders must have just reestablished a role he had been previously assigned.
