Meade, Lee, McPherson, Wright, Parke and no doubt a few others were all successful battlefield commanders but at the same time had all been military Engineers. Were there any other significant individuals, civil war era , who had also been drawn from engineering units ? Is there something about recognised competence (I mean bright sparks) at an early age and the use of that ability in an initial technical role and that role changing during time of war ? Custer wasn’t an Engineer.

Custer wasn’t an Engineer. Henry Carrinton was among many things an engineer. A lawyer and professor too, so obviously a smart man... but I don't know too much about his background and ACW service, so maybe not a "fit" for you. All the best, Noggy
