Wild you have never been to the battlefield, you have not ridden that nogo terrain. You have given serious thought to unwieldy mules, more than 30 some wounded, and wondered whether GAC had broken off to the north to seek Terry.
If you left the wounded and mules behind how many would you leave behind to care for and to protect that 30 some wounded, which by the way made up the majority of the average size of the engaged companies. And, when they attempted to advance the ground seemed to grow Indians. Without God Grey's rear guard action the survivors could have very well been overcome. There were over 50 wounded when Terry arrived,30 when Benteen arrived. About 50 killed between the valley and Reno hill.
Steve is the Marine, I was USAF, 24 years active and NG.

Never been there, but ive also never Been one to be hasty, and if i make a plan, to make sure i have a backup to that plan.. Yes mules can be quite stubborn and stupid trust me ive owned a few.. Ive been riding and showing horses since i was ten.. Once rode 13 miles and i thought I would be saddle sore for a month So i can only imagine recruits green as grass, riding a horse for what had to seem like hell and ever, and on top of that didnt know how to control one...yeah, that had to be fun.. As far as terrain goes, take it as it comes, trying to take the most sensible route that kept me on as good time as possible ( when possible) Those men and horses and mules had to be bone tired and ready to drop. Rest on the 25th would have been smart, and this is just me, ( my opinion) but i would make darn sure that the other commanding officers terry etc... were going to meet at as closest time possible to consolidate our forces and make sure that when the hammer dropped, IT DROPPED HARD!!! Now i realize that my opinion is nuat that my opinion, but i find it fun to think about how history that day could have been changed...

Hi Tom Nice post. As good a description of active service as I have read in my 20years of posting in this parish. I can accept that outfit was not fit for purpose and its commander lacking in leadership skills. That its officers did the best they could to recover the situation when all was falling asunder. I'll grant you that. However when Custer and his officers led the regiment in review back at fort Abe Lincoin They were declaring it operational. They were setting out to catch a village by surprise and do it some damage ,A repeat of the Washita only on a much greater scale. Yes the 7th had some problems but 10 minutes out from contact they had all the advantages...."Weve caught them napping boys". When you cross the start line to do your opponent ill there are no excuses.
Well done on your 24 years of service.
Best

Hey wild, i have to agree 100 percent, the command was not fit for duty in my opinion.. I tried to get in the military The recruiter told me i was not suitable for any kind of duty due to my health problems and the medicine i had to always take..my dad was crushed..he served 22 years with the screaming eagles airborne outfit and 5 years as a marine...he never got over my not being accepted

Hello Greathunter Your dad was a glutton for punishment. Surely the National Guard could have found a place for you? cheers

Not with all the medication i was on ( for some reason the military takes a dim view on mental illness) After the recruiter read my medical reports, he told my dad that although he liked my patriotism and spunk, i was unsuitable for anything Due to my medical history and my dad Never looked sadder in his life. And the car accident really done a number on my spine, cant sit too long, cant stand too long, cant walk too long, and running aggravates the old injury even today.. But i will tell a funny story about my dads service... When he was stationed in Oklahoma, he was serving with a native american cherokee and for some reason the NA didnt like him and threatened to count coup om him before he scalped him( not kidding) So my dad wasnt one to take any crap from anyone( beat a south korean badly for bucking him in chow line ..so the NA kept on and on with the count coup scalp white man.. So one night when the guy was asleep My dad snuck over and took his knife and cut one off his braids off And you should have heard the commontion he made when. He woke up the next morning..screaming like a mad man over his braids.. Now keep in mind my dad was one of them in charge of the command at the time, so he walks in hearing all this and wants to know from the guy Whats going on? He screams whoever cut my hair is in for it..dad simply tossed him his braid and told him "a word to the wise" "watch how to you speak to a higher ranking officer", now pack your bags, your being transferred out of this oufit..he said everyone at lunch was dying laughing at what happened..
