Knipe says he was with Custer and they did not see the valley fight... Keogh and Cook were both seen near Reno Crossing and was within 75 yards of the crossing when Girard brought word to Cook that the Indians were not on the run and showed fight. So for a moment there it was possible that either Custer was sending support from the rear and had moved further down toward LSH. Knipe says in the Camp notes that there were 75 to a hundred indians in their advance that pulled Custer in that direction... it is also possible that the lodge pole trail led Custer in that direction and would it not be in the same direction that the Indians shot at Reno and his men when they tried to make it to the top of Reno Hill. The same Indians that almost shot Varnum but did shoot the Doctor. Except his adjutant Cook was with Keogh at the time and that was who took word back according to Girard testimony. Custer at that time was not known as far as location. Then E company was seen farther down from Reno Hill about the time that Reno had his men dismount in line. Which makes me think the troops separated or that E company was catching up or that ....
