Hello, boys and girls (?) Yet another question from someone who has not bee to the battlefield. Not Calhoun Hill this time, though. Reading through some of the JSIT stuff. When it comes to the stop/break/pause/meeting/whatever at Cemetery Ridge, I started thinking about what Custer and the rest could see if looking towards Battle Ridge. Is, say, Greasy Grass Ridge visible from CR, or is it too far? Or is the terrain blocking? I believe the area the actual cemetery is today is lower than LSH (if not, please correct me!), but are parts of CR higher offering a better/good view of Battle Ridge? I imagine the areas on the side of for example the Keogh sector is totally out of sight? Sorry for the messy post, been travelling half a day and basically I`m just wondering about the view All the best,Noggy

If you are on Cemetery ridge, you are below all of battle ridge. When Custer was on CR, if Keogh was in the swale where he and his men were found (and I don't believe they were, they were with Custer), he would not have seen anything other than smoke and dust coming from the east side of BR. From the top of BR where the monument is, you are at least 50-75 feet higher than the cemetery, maybe even 100 feet.
From CR you might see the top of Greasy Grass, {depends on the vegetation}, but nothing on the river side and nothing below the top on the west side.

The reason I started wondering, was the wording in another book which I had noted me, along the lines of Custer "seeing and hearing" what was going on on BR when arriving Cemetery Ridge. Ofc it could mean dust and nothing else but it`s annoying to not being able to visualize the terrain like you guys who have been the can. (I know you dont buy the Keogh 3 companies left behind but this is basically just me wondering about lines of sight) All the best, Noggy

Custer (nut) Apollo did some video coverage of a battle battle theory, on the ground. Voila. You can always mute the commentary. There are thirty something short videos in total which deal with all aspects of things up to the close of Custer's fight. Here are views along GGR during a trip with Mr Realbird. linkRegards.
