I am still working on the script. Hope to have it finished today or tomorrow; then it is on to our "Little Big Horn Valley" project. Remember that one? Is there an update for this thread? Delayed by Covid 19 I presume? This autumn their page confirmed Covid created some trouble and that it was planned released in early 21. IMDB has 12th of February as release date but not sure if that is correct. Fred is our inside man but he has his own book going so guess we`ll just have to wait and see. The title alone makes this seem like a very US side-focused story, but from what I`ve read it won`t be, which is good. Not sure what sort of release they are planning but I hope it will be available in physical format. Noggy

After waking up this morning, I googled "A Strategy of Defeat Movie" and got several hits on trailers and several snippets from the movie both live action and computer animated battle overviews. Several are accessible from this link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=SA56kBqEjMk which starts with Trailer 2, but on the side bar you can find others that are very interesting. This is very exciting.

The actual name of the movie is Custer's Strategy of Defeat. My role in it is more passive and as a consultant than anything else. I suggested the movie's title, and it was accepted as such. There are obviously reasons for my suggestion. Also, I reviewed the script several times and made corrections as well as suggestions, not all of which were adopted for various production reasons. While I am listed on IMDb as co-author or co-writer, that is an overly-flattering paean.
And yes, production has been held back because of the disease. They are also trying to get it into the Sundance Film Festival, but no new word on that just yet.
One last thing for Mike Robel: I read your PM and am working on responding... it will probably take a couple days. You asked if I minded you putting up those questions here: not at all; feel free to do whatever you wish: it may throw some new light on these much-deserving message boards.
Best wishes to one and all for a very Merry Christmas, Fred.

Looking forward to this as we need something "new" on the LBH.
Not sure what the film will reveal but as long as they use first-hand accounts and testimoney from RCOI it should be one of the more accurate films made of the LBH.
And if Fred is involved I'm sure it will be!
I see Fred has a new book on Reno coming next year.
Something positive to look forward to other than the current situation we have been dealing with.

Tom,
I think you will be pleased with this movie, or docu-drama, as I call it. It does not have a cast of hundreds, which actually makes it somewhat more authentic than the usual Hollywood stuff. Plus, since the uniforms and gear are truly well-thought-out, I think the realism will be particularly cogent. I know a bunch of the guys in it, and they live these roles almost every day. Wait until you see 1LT William Winer Cooke: everything you see is real, whiskers and all, and if you didn't know better you would think God released him just to come back and do this flick. Another one of our compatriots on these boards is also in the movie as George Herendeen. And... the fellow playing Marcus Reno is actually a Reno, related to the original. You would swear it was the real fellow.
Anyway, Merry Christmas, Tom. Give my best to your wife; hope all is well.
Very best wishes, Fred.

Sounds like the docu-drama will be the most accurate of all the LBH movies/documentaries we've had. Most of them of the "Hollywood" version are completely made up and stretch the truth a la "They Died with Their Boots On" which was well done but far from factual. Flynn was the "perfect" Custer for those Custer Fans.
John Gray did one many years ago which is on video (A Good Day to Die) and was based on his books. Very well done.
Amazing there are descendants of the participants on both sides of the LBH still with us.
Actually the LBH is not ancient history. There are many elderly people alive today, mostly NAs, who are old enough to have known some of the participants in their old age.
A number of those Indians lived well into the 20th century with some of the last dying in the late 1940s and even as late as 1960!
I was alive then so it's either I'm very "old" or the history of America is still alive!
Merry Christmas to you and yours and let's hope 2021 will be better than 2020!

I am very excited about this. I do not think you will be disappointed. You just need to remember, these are not professional actors; they are professional re-enactors. And you will never have a more authentic display than what you will see in this movie. Best wishes, Fred.

I have had many friends who are reenactors. From the previews, I can't imagine I'll be disappointed.

Fred,
I told you years ago that your books would change the culture of LBH. It was far too focused on myth, and far too little on historical accuracy and sound military analysis.
You will be the key analyst in the future, it is already happening. 100 years from now, this board will be like: Gray? Who is that?
You did exceptional work, friend.
Congratulations,
William

You will be the key analyst in the future, it is already happening. 100 years from now, this board will be like: Gray? Who is that? You did exceptional work, friend. Congratulations, William Will, That is an exceptional compliment, especially considering the source. Thank you. You should also be aware you were the primary impetus in me writing that valley book. While you are mentioned in the acknowledgement section, you will also see a great deal of "yourself" throughout Part II (which deals with the move into the valley, per se; Part I is a bloviated build-up, once again tackling Custer's orders from Terry: you should get a kick out of that, believe me!!!). A good deal of the second part revolves around discussions you and I have had, both here and on the telephone. Anyway, I truly hope you are well... and happy. And will enjoy Christmas!! It is my favorite time of the year, but circumstances have been such that it has been some time since my wife and I have been really able to have a good, old-fashioned one. Maybe next year. Very best wishes and fondest regards to a good firmed and a damn fine man, Fred.
