Hello, good people.
Could anyone give me roughly the distance from where Crook met Crazy Horse at the Rosebud to the camp at Goose Creek? Am I way of mark if thinking it`s around 35-40 miles?

As the Crows scout, straight line, you are on the money link Battleground is on the bend in the creek (river) a little south of Kirby. Measured from the Little Goose. The route of march indicated on Brown's Map indicates movement towards the Tongue and a dogleg left (west) onto the Rosebud. All sorts of questions about this - long avoided and treated with a bessom to remain obscure but, why was Reno sent down the Tongue at the time that Crook was on it. You cannot dream this stuff up. Assuming that Brown's data is accurate then we have the smoking gun. Historical data Battle on the Tongue - Mil intel 1876 - Terry knew that Crazy Horse caused havoc on the Tongue in 1865.  Indian Sunset 1971I'll dig out Stanton's report on milages and route when I have a few minutes. That should plot the June march  accurately. Voila . God bless the Engineers. A follow-up question, since I trust you guys more  Is the distance from the Rosebud around 30 miles? If so, what would the distance from the Indian camp(s) on June 16th-17th to Rosebud be? Was Crook more than 25 miles off? All the best, Noggy...who has probably read the correct answer at one time but God knows where. |
