Hello, I'm not a history buff at all, but recently while searching on ancestry, a search of my great- grandfathers father, lead me to David W. Harris who was originally from Indianapolis. I had heard from an elderly family member as a child that he had been a medal of honor recipient, but had no idea for what as he died in Washington DC when my GGF was very young. I am wondering if anyone would know if there is a photo? I have looked at several websites and have not been able to locate a photo. Thank you.

Hi - looks like no-one has tracked down a photo of David W Harris. His Medal of Honor citation reads "Brought water to the wounded, at great danger to his life, under a most galling fire from the enemy". He had probably volunteered for that detail as well as picket duty the night before when the survivors were besieged. That marks him as a committed brave soldier. He enlisted 29 September 1873, was 5'6 ΒΌ" tall with blue eyes, brown hair & a florid complexion as recorded at the time. There is info that he married Mary Duffy on 19 July 1881 at Fort Meade, South Dakota. Is this the same David Harris? Do you know what the W stands for or where he was born and died? Any personal information would be of interest on this group.
