I'm taking my father, who is 78, for his first LBH visit next week and I am looking for a couple of documentaries for him that come recommended. It's been years since I've watched any. Unfortunately he is not a reader otherwise I'd have him sorted him out. I just want a picture in his mind beyond what I'm going to tell him on the trip out there from Bozeman Ideally I'm trying to find one engaging with a good overview and without gross falsehoods and one that is not too in depth, though he is very smart and picks up fast, it's just a topic he knows nothing about beyond Custer and his command getting wiped out. I don't want anything that spends time on Libby or Custer's non-military pursuits or one that is so generalized that you'd think it was just Custer and his command and Crazy Horse and the Sioux in the battle... and something that avoids the 'there was no last stand new age revisionism'... and avoids the 'Custer was mad and frothing at the mouth for glory', ah there I go again my dad enjoys my historical rants at least. Am I asking too much lol? Thanks for any ideas

While it is flawed in some ways you may show him "Son Of the Morning Star"(Movie). There are archived PBS docs. as well as History Channel and AHC stuff. Good luck. Enjoy the time with your dad, one day it will run out and you will be the old man. My oldest son got out of the Military and we took a two week trip out there about 5 years ago, I was merely a babe of 64.
Regards, Tom

Try him with this; us lot will probably pick holes in it but it will give him the general idea. link

Thank you both, I'd totally forgotten about Son of the Morning Star. I think the PBS doc you linked is the best bet, I'll send him both though, he will like the movie.
I will enjoy the trip, we haven't ever done anything together like this, we're hitting the museums in Cody and then 4 days in Yellowstone too.

Actually, there are none.
The TV mini-series movie, Son of the Morning Star, is about as good as it gets, though it too is flawed.
In my opinion, the best video ever made-- and it was also on TV, I believe-- was the one done by Richard Fox about his findings on the archaeological digs of 1984-1985.
Best wishes, Fred.
